Is treatment from a doctor necessary?
Most brown spots are harmless and do not go deep into the skin. Home remedies can help a lot, and there is treatment available from a dermatologist such as chemical peels and laser treatment. However, if the spots change over time it’s a good idea to see a doctor to eliminate the possibility of skin cancer.
Some signs that a doctor should be consulted are if the spots:
- Are increasing in size
- Are very dark
- Have irregular borders
- Are red, tender and bleed
- Cause the surrounding area to itch
What is Melasma?
During pregnancy, dark patches of pigmentation may appear on the skin. They are caused by the hormones estrogen and progesterone that produce more melanin causing the dark blotches when the woman is exposed to the sun. Women who live in sunny regions who have light brown skin are the most susceptible to developing this. Heredity is a major factor determining if a woman will develop melasma. Oral contraceptive pills are also one of the causes.
The best treatment to remove the blotches will depend on your skin type. Some of the most common treatments are:
- Face cream with hydroquinone
- Tretinoin, which increases skin cell turnover
- Chemical peels
- Azelaic acid, which decreases the activity of melanocytes
- Ultrasound facials
- Laser peels and IPL
